Where Amaj7 is used

Amaj7 is the one chord (Imaj7) in the key of A major and the four chord (IVmaj7) in the key of E major. Take A and add one note, G♯, which sits a half step below the root. That close pair of notes gives the chord its soft, open sound, and you hear it a lot in jazz, soul, R&B and lo-fi.

Progressions with Amaj7

  • ii7 - V7 - Imaj7: Bm7 - E7 - Amaj7
  • Imaj7 - vi7 - ii7 - V7: Amaj7 - F♯m7 - Bm7 - E7

Do not mix it up with A7. That chord has a flat seventh and sounds tense. Amaj7 has the major seventh and sounds settled.
