Honest, useful, accurate - by design.
Our goal is simple: give home studio producers information they can actually trust. Here's how we research our guides, where our information comes from, and the standards we hold ourselves to.
Our commitment to honesty
We are a reader-first publication. Our recommendations are based on merit - not on which brand pays the most or offers the biggest commission. If a cheaper product is better for your needs, we'll tell you, even when it earns us nothing.
We are researchers and writers, not a product testing laboratory, and we do not independently test every product we write about. Many gear sites imply hands-on testing of dozens of products they have never physically handled. We don't do that. Where our analysis rests on documentation and reviewer consensus rather than first-hand use, we say so on the page.
How we research products
Every recommendation is built from documented, checkable sources. Here is what we draw on and what we weigh:
Manufacturer specifications
Impedance, frequency response, connectivity, system requirements and platform support, taken from official documentation and linked so you can verify it.
Published measurements
Where independent measurement data exists from established outlets, we weigh it against the manufacturer's claims.
Producer consensus
How products are discussed over time across professional review outlets and production communities, especially problems that surface only after months of ownership.
Value for money
Whether it's worth the price at different budget levels, and what you give up by spending less.
Fit for the job
Who a product suits and who should skip it. Every pick carries a "watch out for" note, because seven flawless products is not a real comparison.
What we don't claim
We don't claim hands-on testing we haven't done. Prices are approximate and change often, so check current listings before buying.
How we choose "best of" lists
Our "best" lists are ranked on quality and fit - not affiliate payouts. Products are evaluated against the specific need each guide addresses. For example, "best audio interface for beginners" is judged on beginner-friendliness, not raw professional specs. We update these rankings as new products launch and as the documented consensus shifts.
We do not accept payment for placement, for positive coverage, or for inclusion in a guide, and no manufacturer or PR agency reviews our content before publication.
Accuracy & corrections
Prices, features, and availability change often, so we review and update our key guides regularly, and show a "last updated" date on each one. If you spot an error, contact us - we'll investigate and correct it promptly. If a correction materially changes a recommendation, we note the change rather than editing silently.
Use of AI in our content
We use AI tools to assist with drafting and structuring content, like many modern publishers. Every guide is directed, fact-checked and edited by a human before publication, and specifications are verified against manufacturer documentation. We do not publish unreviewed AI output.
Editorial independence and authorship
Our editorial content is separate from our monetization. Advertisers and affiliate partners have no influence over our reviews, rankings, or opinions. Sponsored content, if ever published, is clearly labeled.
Guides are published under the Shlohmo editorial team byline. We use a team byline rather than invented individual personas, because we would rather be accurate about who produced the work than manufacture an authority figure. Learn more on our About page.
