F♯sus4

F♯sus4 (F sharp suspended fourth) is built from 3 notes: F♯, B, C♯.

  • F♯root
  • Bperfect fourth
  • C♯perfect fifth

Formula: 1, 4, 5

How to play F♯sus4 on guitar

EADGBE
Barre on fret 2, root on the 6th string
2 4 4 4 2 2
9fr×EADGBE
Barre on fret 9, root on the 5th string
x 9 11 11 12 9

Read the diagrams with the low E string on the left. × means do not play that string, ○ means play it open.

Easier way: there is no open F♯sus4 shape, so it is usually played with one of the movable shapes above. With a capo you can use a shape you already know: capo on fret 2 and play the Esus4 shape, or capo on fret 4 and play the Dsus4 shape.

How to play F♯sus4 on piano

BF♯C♯

Play F♯, B, C♯ together. With your right hand, use fingers 1, 3 and 5 (thumb on F♯). Your left hand can play F♯ an octave lower for a fuller sound.

How F♯sus4 is used

A sus4 chord takes out the third and puts the fourth in its place. F♯sus4 has B where F♯ has A♯. With no third, the chord is neither major nor minor, and it sounds like it is waiting to go somewhere.

Most of the time the B drops one step and the chord settles back into F♯. Try these:

  • F♯ - F♯sus4 - F♯: a quick change that adds movement while you strum one chord.
  • F♯sus4 - F♯ - B: the sus4 builds a little tension before the five chord resolves to B.
