Where Gmaj7 is used
Gmaj7 is the one chord (Imaj7) in the key of G major and the four chord (IVmaj7) in the key of D major. Take G and add one note, F♯, which sits a half step below the root. That close pair of notes gives the chord its soft, open sound, and you hear it a lot in jazz, soul, R&B and lo-fi.
Progressions with Gmaj7
Do not mix it up with G7. That chord has a flat seventh and sounds tense. Gmaj7 has the major seventh and sounds settled.
