FL Studio vs Logic Pro comes down to your computer first, then how you like to work. If you use Windows, the choice is made for you: Logic Pro only runs on Apple devices, so FL Studio wins. If you are on a Mac, our pick is Logic Pro for most people who record vocals or instruments, and FL Studio for beatmakers who think in patterns and want the step sequencer.

Here is how we got there, with every price taken from Image-Line and Apple.

Which is better, FL Studio or Logic Pro?

Neither is better at everything. In our view, Logic Pro gives Mac users more for the money if they record and arrange full songs, while FL Studio is the quicker tool for building beats from loops and patterns. Both make professional records; the better one is the one you finish songs in.

FL Studio vs Logic Pro price

On a Mac, the two cost about the same for what most people need. FL Studio Producer Edition, the cheapest edition that records audio, is $179. Logic Pro is $199.99. That is a $20.99 difference.

  • Cheapest way in: FL Studio Fruity at $99, but it cannot record vocals or guitars.
  • Everything included: FL Studio All Plugins at $449, against Logic Pro’s single $199.99 price.
  • Monthly option: Logic Pro comes inside Apple Creator Studio for $12.99 a month or $129 a year. FL Studio also has a monthly Rent-to-Own plan that becomes yours after 12 payments.

Can I use FL Studio on a Mac?

Yes. FL Studio runs on both Windows and macOS. That is its big practical advantage: if you might switch between a Windows PC and a Mac, FL Studio goes with you. Logic Pro does not run on Windows at all, and on a Mac it needs Apple silicon, according to Apple’s own requirements.

Is Logic Pro better than FL Studio for beginners?

For a beginner on a Mac, we would start with GarageBand, which is free, and move to Logic Pro when you outgrow it. Apple says a GarageBand project opens in Logic Pro, so nothing you make is wasted. FL Studio has no free version to grow out of; its trial lets you save projects but not reopen them until you buy. See our best DAW for beginners guide and GarageBand vs Logic Pro.

Workflow: patterns vs tracks

FL Studio

FL Studio is built around a step sequencer and patterns. You build a drum pattern, a melody pattern and a bass pattern, then arrange them in the playlist. Many hip hop and trap producers start here because it suits loop-based music. The trade-off, in our view: a pattern-first layout is less natural for recording long vocal or guitar takes than a track-based DAW.

Logic Pro

Logic Pro works like a traditional studio: one track per instrument along a timeline. That suits recording singers and bands. It also has Live Loops, a grid of loops you can trigger to try arrangements, and Apple’s newer tools, including Session Players (AI bass, keyboard, synth and drum parts), Stem Splitter (separates drums, bass, vocals and other parts of a mixed song), Mastering Assistant and Flex Pitch for pitch correction.

FL Studio vs Logic Pro for hip hop and EDM

Both handle hip hop and EDM well. If your music starts as loops and 808 patterns, we lean towards FL Studio for its pattern workflow. If you also record rappers or singers and want built-in tools like Flex Pitch and Stem Splitter, Logic Pro covers more without extra purchases. If you perform live with clips, also look at Ableton Live, which is built around that.

Our verdict

  • You use Windows: FL Studio. Logic Pro is not an option.
  • Mac, you record vocals or instruments: Logic Pro, at $199.99.
  • Mac, you make beats from patterns and samples: FL Studio Producer at $179.
  • Mac, you are not sure: start in GarageBand for free, then decide.
  • You need to work on both Windows and Mac: FL Studio.

Whichever you choose, the skills carry over. Tracks, MIDI, mixers and plugins work the same way in both; see what a DAW is and what MIDI is.
